A NUTRITION AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE SITE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE!

About EUFIC

The European Food Information Council (EUFIC) is an independent, non-profit organisation which provides scientific based information on food and food-related topics in a form that is understandable reliable and relevant. We want to enhance the public's understanding of nutrition and food safety; thus raising the consumer's awareness of the active role they play in choosing a well-balanced healthy diet and safe food handling. We are a unique and vital link ,channelling information gathered at the source - primarily from nutrition and food safety experts - through to the consumers.

Our Nutrition On Line Project:

Knowledge about nutrition is one of the most important building blocks for good health.

With so many rapidly multiplying health and lifestyle sites, reliable and accurate content and information is ever more important. In the current online environment, information is not always relevant to the diversity of languages and cultures we have here in Europe. EUFIC understood that an on line presence, providing well validated and multilingual information is an essential step for effective communication and promoting healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices throughout Europe. The Quality of our content is absolutely central to our operational philosophy and EUFIC develops and publishes material in partnership with recognised experts, acknowledged for their credibility in their field of activity.

The next step in our overall on-line strategy is to maximise the effectiveness of EUFIC's information and outreach programs within an active web approach. With the EUFIC On Line Nutrition Project we want to build on its capacity of the new generation internet to work associatively and interactively.

As stage 1 of this project, we are building a web site oriented toward children and adolescents Coolfood.
We are doing this via two approaches :

- firstly providing on line tools for teaching nutrition topics at schools
- secondly to attract children and adolescents directly to the site.

We have extensively researched the perceptions of young people about nutrition and have put this analysis together with analysis of their behaviour as internauts. We want to add value to our content in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian by targeting, presenting and grouping it in response to the requirements of children and adolescents on line.

An essential element to our in line programme is building our strategic partnerships.

They include for the time being the Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger website, which is an international classroom where you will find lessons prepared as a framework for teachers, with the understanding that teachers will need to tailor the scope, language, discussions and activities provided for each lesson to fit their students and local conditions.
Three lessons are provided for each of three school levels: primary, intermediate, and secondary. The lessons have been directed towards the middle of the developmental skills range for each level. As grade levels and student ages are defined differently around the world, teachers will need to examine the lessons and select the materials that best match their students' level of cognitive development, making modifications as necessary.
All levels cover the topics of What are hunger and malnutrition, and who are the hungry? Why are people hungry and malnourished? and What can we do to help end hunger? Each lesson contains Objectives, Concepts and Activities to engage your students in a discussion about these serious and persistent problems.

You will find sample materials and lessons, and an interactive forum for exchanging ideas and experiences around the world.
